How a Toronto Architecture Professional Found the Right Role Through Axis Recruitment
A case study on architecture recruitment in Toronto, and what it looks like when the process is done right.
When Axis Recruitment reached out to Caterina on LinkedIn, she wasn't looking for a new job. She had started to think about it, but she hadn't made any moves yet. She decided to hear them out anyway, and what followed turned out to be one of the better career decisions she's made.
How It Started
Caterina is an architecture professional based in Toronto. She wasn't on the market, but she wasn't closed to the idea of a new role. When Axis reached out we told her that based on her profile, she looked like a strong fit for a role we were working to fill, and she said she'd be interested in hearing more.
She'd heard from recruiters before, so she knew what a generic pitch sounds like. Given our AEC-only focus, our approach was different. "I decided to work with Axis because they specialize in the architecture and design industry and demonstrated a clear understanding of the skills required in the field and of the whole design process," she said.
A lot of architects have fielded outreach from recruiters who couldn't tell a design role from any other technical opening. Within a single conversation, Caterina could tell Axis worked in her field and understood the opportunities.
What She Was Actually Looking For
Caterina knew what she wanted from her next role, even if she wasn't urgently chasing it. She was looking for a place where she could do meaningful work across project phases and keep growing, both technically and professionally. Just as important was the environment itself: the values of the team, the kind of studio culture she'd be walking into, and whether there was room to develop.
Those are the things that are hardest to read from the outside. A job posting will list the software requirements and the years of experience. It won't tell you how a studio treats its people, or whether "growth opportunities" means anything past the offer letter. That's the part Caterina wanted help reading, and it's where Axis spent its time.
What Made Working With Axis Different?
The first was industry knowledge and the time we put into understanding her. "What stood out most was their industry knowledge and the time they took to understand my background beyond just my resume, by asking questions about me, my values, and my goals," she said. Rather than skimming a resume for keywords, Axis asked what she actually wanted from her day-to-day, what she was good at, and what she wanted next.
The second was honesty. "I also appreciated their honesty about studio cultures, team structures, and long-term growth potential." Candid conversations about what a firm is really like, before an offer rather than after, are how you close the gap between expectations and the reality of Day 1. Most candidates only discover that gap once they've already started.
The third was preparation. Axis helped her get ready for the interview itself, suggesting she prepare an introduction and rehearse in advance, and coaching her on how to reframe certain phrases in a more positive, confident tone. For a lot of designers, presenting yourself is harder than the work itself, and having someone in your corner for it changes the experience.
The fourth was access to the people already inside. "They also put me in contact with current employees they'd worked with, so I could get insight into their experience at the firm I was applying for." Talking to people who actually do the job, at the actual studio, is the closest thing to seeing behind the curtain before you commit.
Why the Opportunity Felt Right
What sealed it was the studio itself. Caterina found exactly the kind of environment she'd described wanting, one where the people around her were invested in her getting up to speed.
"What stands out about this studio is the availability everyone offers to explain and teach," she said. "They want to set you up for success, because your success is their success. They empower their employees and trust them. That trust gave me confidence in my abilities and made me grow more than ever before."
That last point is the one that's easy to underrate from the outside. A title and a salary are visible on the offer letter. Whether a studio will actually hand you responsibility and back you while you take it on is much harder to know in advance, and it ended up being the thing that mattered most.
Since Joining
The reality has held up. "The biggest highlight has been being trusted with responsibility early on, contributing to complex projects, and learning many new aspects of the construction process," Caterina said. "It's been very rewarding."
Just as importantly, the role matched what she'd been told it would be. "The reality has aligned with, if not exceeded, the expectations," she said. "Responsibilities, tasks, team structure, and project involvement were all accurately communicated, which made the transition smooth."
That alignment is the part of the process Axis takes the most pride in. A lot of firms measure themselves on volume, how many candidates they place. Axis measures itself on fit: placements that last at companies where people actually want to stay.
Her Advice for Architects and Designers Considering a Move
Two things, in Caterina's words.
Be clear about what you want. "Be clear about what you're looking for. Your short-term and long-term goals, your values, and how you want to contribute to the firm. Title and salary will come as a result of the right fit, not the other way around."
And look past the obvious. "Consider the firm's culture, its style, its vision, project typology, and design approach. Be specific and honest about who you are." Working with a recruiter who understands the industry, she added, can provide clarity and perspective during what otherwise feels like an overwhelming process.
